by Grosvenor Merle-Smith, JtMFH, Bull Run Hunt Bull Run's hounds routinely donate blood to the Eastern Veterinary Blood Bank as part of an ongoing program. The EVBB opened in 1993 and is one of only two centers which supply canine blood products to vets across the U.S. Eighty percent (80%) of EVBB's blood comes from packs of hounds. (410-224-BANK) Blood is a life-saving product which needs to be donated by animals for animals of the same species. No other source is available. A single donation can be used to save up to two lives, because it can be separated into red blood cells and plasma and given to animals suffering from anemia or who have lost blood from trauma or surgery. The need is often sudden and unexpected, so the blood bank always needs blood on hand. |
